Toenail Fungus

Nail fungus is the most common of all the nail abnormalities and it usually causes a discoloration, disfiguration and the eventual destruction of the toenails and fingernails. Both fingernails and toenails are susceptible to the nail fungus, which usually manifests as discoloration and thickening of the nail and crumbling edges. The condition most commonly occurs in toenails.

Additional Names for Toenail Fungus

  • Nail Fungus
  • Fingernail Fungus
  • Suggested Treatments

Nail fungus infections are more common in men than women and in the elderly than the young. Additional traits or factors that raise one's risk of nail fungal infection include: diminished blood circulation, a weakened immune system, diabetes, AIDS, slow growing nails, genetics, heavy perspiration, humid environments, walking barefoot in damp public places, previous injury or infection, tight footwear with crowding of the toes, wearing socks/shoes that prevent ventilation and exercise that causes repeated minor trauma. Sometimes the infection can be attributed to unsanitary tools and pedicure tubs.

    Commonly Asked Questions

    • I just have a slight discoloration on my toenails – could this be considered fungus and is it something I should get treated?
    • Without seeing your specific condition it is hard to say if it is a fungus. However many times the initial sign is discoloration so it is worth coming in and having our specialist look at it to determine if treatment is needed before it gets worse.
